Owen’s Story: From Coat Rack to “Cream Cycle”

Someone else’s trash truly has the potential to be another’s treasure, a concept that Habitat Chesapeake board member Owen Rouse recently discovered refurbishing an old bicycle. When Owen first noticed it, the old-timey bike had a flat tire and was primarily used as a coat rack. It was bound for the dumpster until he gave it a new life.

Owen has been a Habitat Chesapeake Board member for 24 years, was President for five years, and currently sits on several committees. This project was his first foray into bike reconstruction, and he put around 60 hours of work into making it a working bicycle again. What a fresh coat of paint and some elbow grease can accomplish is amazing! The bike was sold as a part of a successful silent auction at the Timonium ReStore.

At Habitat Chesapeake, we are huge proponents of reducing, reusing and recycling and encourage everyone to find items they can repurpose or donate to a ReStore today!
