Carter’s devotion to and work with the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity absolutely elevated its profile. In Baltimore’s Sandtown-Winchester community, outside the Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake ReStore, people are remembering his lasting impact in the neighborhood – and around the world.

“We got a tremendous amount of homeless in this country and a lot of people that don’t have a decent home. So, we’re trying to publicize and let people know if we work together, we can resolve the homeless problem,” Carter said in March 1992 during a visit to Baltimore.

Marylanders who worked alongside Carter, building homes in Baltimore and around the world, are remembering him fondly.

“This, in the red, is me, and this is Mr. Carter, and this is Rosalynn,” said Ampili Abraham, a Habitat for Humanity volunteer who showed 11 News a photo from one of the Carters’ visits to Baltimore. “That was his goal, every human to have a house to live.”

Abraham traveled to South Africa with the Carters in 2002, where they built 100 homes. She told 11 News that the time she spent with the former president and first lady changed her entire life.
