Empowering Families, Revitalizing Neighborhoods, Transforming Futures
Creating Homes and Hope in Central Maryland Since 1982
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization dedicated to creating a world where everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. Operating in all 50 states and more than 70 countries, Habitat empowers families through homeownership, financial education, and community partnerships.
Here in Maryland, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is proud to carry this mission forward. Since our founding in 1982, we have built and renovated more than 800 homes in 18 communities across Baltimore City and Baltimore, Anne Arundel, and Howard counties. These homes have provided stability for more than 2,500 children and family members while revitalizing neighborhoods suffering from vacancy and disinvestment.

Guided by faith. United by purpose.

The Habitat Model
Affordable Housing Through Partnership and Sweat Equity
Habitat’s work is powered by our unique “partnership housing” model. Future Habitat homeowners invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity by working alongside volunteers, staff, and neighbors to build their own homes and those of other families. In addition, they participate in financial education classes, budgeting workshops, and home maintenance training to prepare for long-term stability.
This model not only reduces construction costs but also builds pride, ownership, and lifelong connections. Mortgage payments from Habitat families are reinvested, helping us serve even more families in need of affordable housing.

What do you look for when choosing a building location?
At Habitat Chesapeake, we select where we build based on a variety of criteria, working alongside many collaborators to reinvigorate disinvested neighborhoods.
We look for: strong community partners, anchor institutions and businesses, community development momentum, assets and amenities that attract potential homebuyers, affordable acquisition, availability of contiguous properties & vacant property for new construction, funding availability, improving sales and retail markets, and consistency with Habitat’s legacy and commitments.
