Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not only a day to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and the incredible strides he made in the fight for civil rights, but also a reminder of the progress we’ve achieved as a society because of his tireless work. Yet, as Dr. King foretold, there is still much to be done. In honor of his commitment to service, our dedicated Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake (HFHC) AmeriCorps members celebrate this day annually by participating in MLK Day of Service. This year, in collaboration with Glen MarChurch, HFHC AmeriCorps members partnered with Helping Up Mission, a nonprofit supporting individuals overcoming addiction, homelessness and abuse or poverty through faith, science and community.
“We had a fantastic time and learned a lot about another mission-based program that serves the community of Baltimore in such an amazing way!” Kristen Chapelle, HFHC’s Director of Volunteer Engagement and AmeriCorps Programs noted. HFHC AmeriCorps members served Helping Up Mission participants a hearty lunch and were able to connect with their fellow community members in a meaningful way.
As part of their 1,700 hours of service, HFHC AmeriCorps members honor Dr. King’s legacy on this and every day by making a powerful difference in our Central Maryland community.
