Home for the Holidays

“Though I wasn’t born in Baltimore, this is my home,” said new homeowner Diamynn, expressing deep gratitude and excitement for the opportunities ahead. Her words resonated warmly throughout the festive Milton Avenue Center, where the spirit of the season filled the air.

In December, Habitat Chesapeake (HFHC) relaunched its Home for the Holidays event, a celebration honoring homeowners in the Milton-Montford and Curtis Bay areas who are soon moving into their new homes. The event brought together homeowners, HFHC staff and construction team to reflect on the collective effort that made this moment possible. Attendees heard from HFHC staff, construction team and homeowners, all sharing heartfelt gratitude and well-wishes. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” said Virginia, one of the homeowners highlighted that evening. “It’s taught me so much and gives me the chance to create generational wealth for my two daughters.”

The event was a time of connection, filled with shared laughter, food and joy. Neighbors and staff, both new and familiar, came together to celebrate the success of homeowners soon to graduate from HFHC’s homeownership program—united in the goal of uplifting one another. Leila Kohler-Frueh, HFHC’s VP of Community Engagement & Homeowner Services, offered words of encouragement to the new homeowners, emphasizing their pivotal role in the journey. “The gift of the season is you,” she said. “You truly are the gift and we’re here to honor that tonight. Thank you for being that gift, embracing it and sharing it with the world.”

Guests also heard inspiring remarks from Senator Cory V. McCray and HFHC CEO Mike Posko. As the evening drew to a close, everyone departed with full hearts, satisfied bellies and renewed spirits for the year ahead. From the vibrant ambiance to the mile-wide smiles on the faces of attendees of all ages, the event captured the true meaning of the holidays and reminded us all of the power of community.
