On a chilly morning in November, the quiet neighborhood around Ward Street was filled with the sounds of friendly chatter as Habitat Chesapeake staff, government partners, and neighbors gathered to meet the 2022 class of HabiCorps Workforce Development trainees as they began their daily work.

Beyond the Build: Johns Hopkins Hosts Habitat Seminar

Last month, the Johns Hopkins campus chapter of Habitat Young Professionals hosted the first-ever “Beyond the Build” seminar event, which aims to highlight critical housing issues informed by the intersection of race, wealth, history, and socioeconomics. This spring’s seminar highlighted a local author and journalist, Lawrence Lanahan, and his work, “The Lines Between Us.”

Last month, Habitat Chesapeake staff, volunteers, AmeriCorps and HabiCorps members came together in the Woodbourne-McCabe neighborhood to clean up a lot located next to a Habitat home. The lot also sits alongside the Glenwood Life Recovery Garden, a plot where patients from the Glenwood Life program can grow flowers and vegetables for therapeutic benefits.
